About Positive Tutoring

Positive Tutoring was set up by Phil Martin in 2021. Phil is an experienced, dedicated and enthusiastic teacher who has worked in a secondary special school for 33 years teaching Maths at all levels up to GCSE.

"I have focused mainly on teaching GCSE (Foundation/Higher), Functional Skills and KS3 Maths, but can also offer KS2 Maths SATs and Kent Test Maths preparation.

"My approach is flexible, with some students needing a highly structured individual learning plan and others more able to self-direct their learning, whether practising for exams or improving their understanding of general or specific areas of
the Maths curriculum.

"I aim to boost the confidence of the young people I teach by taking a 'can do it' positive approach, helping them realise that they really can do Maths!"

About Phil Martin

My education and training include a first-class honours degree in `Maths and Education` (University of York), PGCE (Swansea University), `Certificate in Challenging Behaviour` (Canterbury Christ Church University)
and a `Certificate in Counselling Skills`.

During my 33 years of teaching experience at a local SEMH school (rated as Outstanding by Ofsted) I have worked with young people with a range of SEND, including BESD, ADHD, ADD, ASD, Asperger Syndrome, Attachment Disorder, Conduct Disorder, OCD, ODD, PDA, Speech & Language Disorder, Selective Mutism and Tourette’s Syndrome.

I was awarded `Special Needs Teacher of the Year` (South East England) in 2008. I have been Head of Mathematics, leading the Maths department for a number of years, as well as Head of Music. My roles have included learning community manager and year head. Besides class teaching, I have regularly worked with students on a 1 - 1 basis and in small groups, either for intervention purposes or to prepare
students for exams.

I have a current Enhanced DBS Certificate and am committed to the safeguarding and wellbeing of those I tutor (see Safeguarding Policy and Code of Conduct).
